Beyond the Display: IDS 31.5-Inch Spectra 6 ePaper Hardware and Software Solution

Large-format color ePaper can replace printed posters and continuously powered LCD signage in applications where content changes periodically rather than every second. But an ePaper panel alone is not a complete product.
OEMs still need controller electronics, power management, mechanical integration, image processing, storage, connectivity, content management, and a reliable method for updating what appears on the screen.
Interactive Display Solutions (IDS) has developed a complete platform around the 31.5-inch E Ink Spectra 6 color ePaper display. The solution combines the EL315TW1 display module with controller hardware, a custom mounting structure, embedded firmware, image processing, Wi-Fi connectivity, SD-card storage, slideshow management, and a browser-based control interface.
The result demonstrates an important IDS capability: we can support customers with more than display sourcing. IDS can develop the hardware and software required to turn a display module into an integrated OEM solution.
A 31.5-Inch Spectra 6 Display for Large-Format Visual Communication
The EL315TW1 is a 31.5-inch reflective color ePaper display using E Ink Spectra 6 technology. Its native resolution is 2560 × 1440 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Unlike an LCD, the ePaper panel does not depend on a continuously operating backlight. It reflects ambient light and retains a static image after an update without continuously driving the display.
This operating model makes the technology especially relevant for content that must remain visible for long periods, including:
Retail promotional signage
Digital posters
Menu and price displays
Corporate communications
Hotel and hospitality signage
Museums and galleries
Public information boards
Campus and office directories
Showrooms and event displays
Low-power remote information systems
Spectra 6 is designed for saturated color presentation in signage and visual-communication applications. It is not intended to behave like a video display. Image changes take longer than on an LCD, making content strategy and update scheduling important parts of the system design.
A Complete ePaper System Requires More Than a Panel
Integrating a large color ePaper panel presents challenges that do not appear in a conventional monitor project.
The system must correctly manage:
Display initialization and update waveforms
Multiple display-driver regions
Large image buffers
Image resizing and color conversion
Power sequencing and busy-state timing
File storage and content organization
Network setup and recovery
User controls and diagnostics
Mechanical mounting and cable protection
IDS addressed these requirements as a coordinated platform rather than treating the display, electronics, enclosure, and software as unrelated components.
Custom Controller Platform Based on ESP32-S3
The IDS Digital Frame 315 reference system is built around an ESP32-S3-WROOM-2 platform with 8 MB of flash memory and 8 MB of PSRAM.
The processor supports the memory, connectivity, and embedded-web functions required to manage a 2560 × 1440 color ePaper image. The current firmware operates on the OK-DEV315 V3.4 controller-board architecture and includes custom ePaper driver, image-processing, storage, networking, power-management, and user-interface modules.
For OEM projects, IDS can evaluate or develop controller-board configurations around the required:
Display interface
Processor and memory
Connectivity
Power source
Battery architecture
Storage capacity
Mechanical envelope
Input and output requirements
Production volume
Environmental conditions
This provides a path from an evaluation platform to a purpose-built controller for the final product.
Full-Screen and Partial Display Updates
The controller supports complete 2560 × 1440 image updates for full-screen artwork, posters, promotional content, and informational graphics.
It also includes a partial-update function that can address a selected region instead of rewriting the entire screen. The suitability and visual result of a partial update depend on the content, update method, waveform, and application requirements, but regional updates can be useful when only one portion of the displayed information changes.
For engineering and production diagnostics, the firmware includes an eight-color ColorBar test pattern. This helps verify chip-select mapping and confirm that the display’s multiple driver regions are responding correctly.
Image Processing Optimized for Color ePaper
Images developed for LCDs, phones, or printed media cannot always be sent directly to a limited-palette ePaper display and expected to look correct.
The IDS firmware includes an image-conversion pipeline that prepares uploaded JPG and PNG files for the ePaper output format. The internal process uses indexed color data and stores converted images as binary display files for efficient playback.
The current v1.4.0 release introduced several image-quality improvements:
Bayer dithering to distribute color and tonal detail
Weighted RGB color matching to improve dark-image rendering
A stabilized image-conversion pipeline
More consistent preparation of uploaded source images
The firmware uses an eight-entry working palette containing black, white, yellow, red, orange, blue, green, and cyan during image preparation. The conversion process maps source artwork into the color representation required by the target ePaper system.
For a customer-specific product, the image pipeline can be adapted to the content type. Retail graphics, artwork, menus, maps, and status boards may each benefit from different resizing, cropping, color-matching, and dithering choices.
Built-In Wi-Fi and Browser-Based Control
The platform supports two Wi-Fi operating modes.
Station Mode
In Station Mode, the controller connects to an existing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. This allows authorized users on the network to access the device through its web interface.
Access Point Mode
In Access Point Mode, the controller creates its own local wireless network. This is useful for initial setup, demonstrations, installations without an existing network, or direct local administration.
Network settings are stored so the system can reconnect after restart. If an existing network is unavailable, the access-point workflow provides a direct configuration path.
Responsive Web Management Interface
IDS developed a responsive HTML5 interface that allows the display to be managed through a browser without installing a dedicated desktop application.
Available functions include:
Image upload
Image download
Image deletion
SD-card file browsing
Playlist creation and editing
Image order changes
Individual display-duration settings
Slideshow start and control
Operating-mode selection
Storage-capacity review
System-information display
The web interface makes the platform easier to demonstrate, configure, and operate from a computer, tablet, or compatible mobile browser on the same network.
For an OEM program, IDS can customize the interface with application-specific functions, workflows, visual design, terminology, permissions, or API behavior.
Two Slideshow Operating Modes
The controller provides two content-playback modes.
Sequential Mode
Sequential Mode displays all available images in order using a fixed 30-second interval. This provides a straightforward option for unattended demonstrations or signage where every item should remain on screen for the same amount of time.
Playlist Mode
Playlist Mode allows each image to have its own display duration from 1 to 300 seconds. A playlist can contain up to 50 images, with controls for adding, removing, and reordering content.
Playlist settings are stored in non-volatile memory, allowing the configuration to remain available after power is removed or the controller restarts.
This system can support use cases such as:
Longer presentation of primary promotions
Shorter rotation of supporting messages
Scheduled product or menu sequences
Curated artwork slideshows
Demonstration content for exhibitions and showrooms
Local Storage Through an SD Card
The platform uses an SD card for content storage and implements SDMMC communication for efficient file access.
Users can manage stored content from the browser interface, including checking available capacity and reviewing the file list. The firmware converts supported web uploads into the internal binary format required for display playback.
Local storage can be valuable when:
Content must remain available without internet access
A cloud platform is not required
Network connectivity is intermittent
The system needs to restart and recover independently
Customers prefer local control of proprietary images
For applications that require centralized or remote deployment, the API and networking architecture can serve as a foundation for additional content-management functions.
API Support for System Integration
The firmware includes web endpoints for playlist management, slideshow control, SD-card access, and system information.
Representative functions include:
Retrieving the current playlist in JSON format
Saving a playlist
Adding images with defined display durations
Switching between sequential and playlist modes
Controlling slideshow behavior
Reviewing system information
This allows the controller to be operated from its graphical web interface or integrated into another application through HTTP requests.
Depending on project requirements, IDS can develop or adapt APIs for:
Remote content upload
Device-status reporting
Multi-display management
Scheduled updates
Integration with a customer portal
Connection to a local content server
Authentication and access control
Application-specific device commands
The final architecture should be defined around the customer’s security, network, availability, and fleet-management requirements.
Integrated Power Management
Large-format ePaper requires controlled power sequencing during an image update. The IDS platform incorporates firmware control for the IST9201 power-management IC and support for a BQ25896 battery-management device.
A power-hold function helps maintain operation during required system activities. Once an image is written, the bistable ePaper panel can retain the image without the continuous backlight power associated with LCD signage.
Actual system energy consumption and battery life depend on factors such as:
Update frequency
Wi-Fi activity
Processor operating time
Battery capacity
Power-supply efficiency
Environmental temperature
Added peripherals or lighting
For this reason, power architecture should be engineered for the complete product and its real update schedule rather than estimated from the panel alone.
Custom Mounting Bracket and Mechanical Integration

A controller and display still need a safe, repeatable method of physical integration.
IDS can support the mechanical side of the product with a custom mounting bracket and display-integration structure designed around the panel, electronics, cabling, installation orientation, and customer enclosure.
Mechanical integration can address:
Panel support and alignment
Protection of sensitive glass edges
Controller-board placement
Cable routing and strain relief
Service access
Portrait or landscape installation
Wall, enclosure, or open-frame mounting
Thermal and battery clearances
Finished-product appearance
This capability is especially useful for OEMs that want to evaluate ePaper without developing every mechanical component internally.
Engineering Diagnostics and Reliability Improvements
The project has progressed through multiple firmware releases and practical integration fixes.
The current release includes improvements such as:
Asynchronous file-list loading for a more responsive web interface
Improved USB CDC serial stability
More reliable image conversion
Detailed initialization and operation logs
ColorBar testing for display-region diagnostics
System-information tools for commissioning and support
During development, IDS also resolved a display-region rendering issue by aligning BUSY-signal initialization and timing behavior with the panel’s required control sequence. This type of work illustrates why ePaper integration is more than connecting a panel to a generic board: driver timing, power sequencing, memory handling, and regional addressing must operate together correctly.
